they can change the momentum or slow the game down and make players nervous about player harder defense which in turn makes easy baskets. they can slightly change the game but like my coaches always use to tell us put the game out of reach so the refs cant cheat you

Alot, I think baseball umpires have more control but in a close game NBA referees are pretty much right there.
